Rather, you have to take a two-pronged approach to this sort of thing:

Discourage: You can, with varying degrees of success, do things to discourage people from copying things -- this is essentially what the no-copy flag is. It makes it harder to copy things that shouldn't be. Not harder, but more difficult.

Reaction: You can react to IP theft through systems that are already in place -- abuse reports, DMCA.

I think that the concern with CopyBot is that it makes that first part less effective, and I think that people fear that it will happen unbeknownst to them, preventing from reaction. That statement meant to convey that we may be able to help with detection -- which makes reaction easier. There are no magic fixes, merely best efforts on the part of everyone involved.

Re: For Love of IRC | Baba Sucks

OMG YOU GUYS REALLY DO SUCK!!! I have the feeling that the libsl project members are now trying to tell us that this is fixable. "libsecondlife member John Hurliman said in a statement on the group’s blog. “We, the libsecondlife developers, recognize that we must be more vigilant about controlling our creations — we are deeply sorry for any part in the damage which may have been caused.” In my understanding, anything that can be rendered, can be copied too. So, the residents and media have to get used to this situation - anyone can copy (just like ctrl-c, ctrl-v in the browser), or just like anyone can copy and produce duplicate clothes in RL. The problem is purely social and philosophical, according to me.

Re: For Love of IRC | Baba Sucks

IRC has always been the definitive place for the authentic, true, and genuine voice of the masses. -- God dammit Baba, the little comment editor has the buttons to format bold, italic and underline, but not sarcasm. People are gonna think I think that! AUUUUGGGH. I will not bring up arguing on the internet. I will not bring up arguing on the internet. I will not bring up arguing on the internet. I guess that's a unique way to do PR. I dunno, I'm all for LibSL and everything, but I often wonder if the arrogance some (not all) members of the group display is really the best way to handle things.
